Common Percentage Mistakes
Percentage calculations can give the wrong answer if you use the wrong value as your starting point. Keep these common mistakes in mind.
Using the Wrong Base Value
For a percentage increase or decrease, calculate the change against the original value.
Example:
80 → 100
(20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%
So the increase is 25%, not 20%.
Confusing Percentage Change and Difference
Use percentage change when you have an original and a new value.
Use percentage difference when you’re comparing two values equally and neither is the starting point.
Forgetting That Percentages Can Exceed 100%
A percentage doesn’t have to stop at 100%.
Example:
150 is 150% of 100.
Adding and Subtracting the Same Percentage
A 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease doesn’t bring you back to the original value.
100 × 1.20 = 120
120 × 0.80 = 96
You end up with 96, because the second percentage is calculated from a different base.
Frequently Asked Questions
Divide the percentage by 100, then multiply by the number.
Example:
25% of 200 = (25 ÷ 100) × 200 = 50
Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100.
Example:
40 out of 160 = (40 ÷ 160) × 100 = 25%
Find the increase, divide it by the original value, and multiply by 100.
Example:
100 → 125 = 25% increase
Find the decrease, divide it by the original value, and multiply by 100.
Example:
250 → 200 = 20% decrease
Percentage change compares a new value with an original value. Percentage difference compares two values when neither one is treated as the starting point.
Yes. If the value is greater than the reference amount, the percentage can exceed 100%.
Example:
150 is 150% of 100.
Divide the marks obtained by the total marks and multiply by 100.
Example:
450 out of 500 = 90%
Yes. To add 20% to 100, multiply by 1.20 to get 120. To subtract 20% from 100, multiply by 0.80 to get 80.
